Image: Are knee cracking sound and vitamin D deficiency correlated?

Hello doctor,

My query is regarding knee joint and lower back pain. I usually get a cracking sound when I bend my knees and while getting up. The sound is not accompanied by pain. Is this a cause of concern? Please let me know if any test or x-ray needs to be done. I am also having lower back pain problem. While bending I experience this pain. I am also having vitamin D deficiency, which is 20.80 nmol/L. Do these knee joint sound and vitamin D deficiency correlated? Please suggest some way to treat this deficiency as spending time in the sun can increase the chance of cancer. Or please suggest the right time to be spent in sunlight. Do I need to take supplements for Vitamin D deficiency? If so, then please suggest a good one.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Hope this message finds you in good health.

  • You are right. The cracking sounds that you hear in the joints are due to calcium and vitamin D deficiency.
  • These sounds do not mean that bones rub against each other. It means that air bubbles burst inside the joint. These sounds will not cause any harm to your joints in the long run.
  • Calcium rich diet and vitamin D3 supplements 60,000 IU tablets should be taken once in a week for two to three months. Calcium tablets also can be taken with vitamin D tablets. Consult your doctor, discuss with him or her and take the medicine with consent.
  • Yoga and meditation will help. Early morning sunlight before 8 AM should be taken on skin for at least 20 minutes. This will not cause any cancer.
  • Lower back pain can be detected by doing an MRI of the back. Back exercises will help.

Thank you doctor,

Your advice is helpful. My calcium level is 9 mg/dL. Is this insufficient? Do the supplements suggested by you have side effects? Do I need to take supplements for entire life? Currently, I am taking some ayurveda medicines like Ashokarishtam and Kumaryasavam. I hope these supplements will not interfere with these medicines.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

  • Your calcium levels appear to be normal. So, no need to worry.
  • There are no side effects of these medicines as they are just bone tonics. You can take them intermittently for your lifetime.
  • You can take the supplements for two to three months and then discontinue it for a month and again restart. For your age, you can take the course for three months and then check for improvement.
  • Ayurveda medicines are safe and good. But, do not take ayurveda and allopathy at the same time.
