What could be the cause of itchiness in the mouth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been having itchiness on the roof of my mouth for a week now. I think the itchiness started when I ate spicy food. How can I stop it? I do not know if I am allergic to something. I have had an itchy mouth rooftop before as well.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Upon review, the findings were erosions on the palate with red and white streaks, which could be erosive lichen planus. It could be a precancerous lesion like leukoplakia, and spicy food is one of the causes of a precancerous lesion, but on multiple occasions, other causes also play a role.

I suggest getting an excisional biopsy to know the exact diagnosis. Avoid spices, sharp tooth injury, smoking, and alcohol. Precancerous lesions do have a chance of progressing to cancer. Recurrence may occur if not completely removed.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
