Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have developed a scratchy white line near my gum on the roof of my mouth. I am just curious about what this could be?

Answered by Dr. Naveen Thomas

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and in order to answer what it is please let me know about it.

  1. What is your age?

  2. Do you have any specific oral habits that might have caused this, such as smoking or consuming very hot or cold foods?

  3. Do you have a burning sensation or irritation?

  4. How long have you had this condition, in days or weeks?

  5. Are you able to scrape the white lesion off?

It seems to be a fungal infection or scalding due to hot drinks, food, or even vitamin deficiencies, etc. If possible, could you provide a well-lit picture using a torch for better examination? Please get back with answers.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply. I found the white lesion of last week. I am unable to scratch it. I can only feel it with my tongue, and it has a sandy texture. It is located in a tricky spot, making it hard for me to take pictures. Can you tell me if it is progressing or staying the same in size? I do smoke. Do you think it could be leukoplakia or something else? I am somewhat worried now and seeking advice. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, it seems to be leukoplakia by the pictures (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). You need to stop smoking completely as soon as possible. Avoid too hot or too cold or spicy foods or anything acidic which can irritate the region more. You need to see a dentist so that he can confirm whether it is indeed leukoplakia and suggest a suitable treatment plan for you. You may need to then use a steroid gel to apply over the area along with a multivitamin containing vitamin B complex daily. Review it bi-weekly or monthly with your dentist to know the treatment progress. I hope you find this information helpful.

Regards.
