Could hypercholesterolemia be linked to recurrent lipomas?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I frequently develop lipomas or fat boils on my body. A particularly persistent one formed in my upper back during childhood, became infected, and discharged pus. Though the wound healed, some fatty tissue remnants remain under the skin. Also, I often experience lipoma-like boils in my breast, diagnosed as fibroadenoma, leading to two surgeries, one at age 16 and the other at 25. Could hypercholesterolemia be linked to my condition? What causes these occurrences? Is there a metabolic issue at play? And how can I prevent my body from producing these fat boils?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I hope you have received accurate diagnoses. Lipomas typically do not become infected and often remain benign throughout life. Fibroadenomas, on the other hand, are distinct and benign, usually not recurring. It is important that your lesions were confirmed histopathologically. If your lesions are becoming infected and discharging, I would question the diagnosis. For any future lesions, seek evaluation from a reputable dermatologist. Hypocholesteremia can lead to firm swellings in various body parts, which may become infected. Manage hypocholesteremia through medication and lifestyle adjustments under a physician's guidance.

I hope this information proves helpful.

Thank you.
