Is a lung CT scan necessary for a 56-year-old former smoker?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 56-year-old male and weigh 163 pounds. I smoked regularly from the age of 18 until recently, when I stopped because of breathing difficulties and fatigue.

My symptoms include:

  • Mild chronic cough.

  • Occasional wheezing.

  • A family history of lung disease.

I have never undergone lung cancer screening before. Since I smoked from the age of 18 to 56, should I get a lung CT scan now?

I have read about low-dose CT screening, but I am not sure whether it is recommended for someone with my history and symptoms.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Since you are over 50 years old and were previously a smoker, it is very important to undergo a screening CT (computed tomography) scan of the lungs. If there is a family history of lung cancer, it becomes even more important after the age of 60 to have a high-resolution CT scan of the lungs to check for any tumors or abnormal activity.

We recommend this primarily for reassurance because the treatment of lung cancer has become much more advanced and is no longer as frightening as it once was. Therefore, we do not want you to be overly anxious about treatment. There are now many effective options available for managing lung cancer.

However, early detection remains extremely important. If the condition is discovered at an early stage, a simple minimally invasive procedure may be sufficient, and in some cases, you may even be discharged from the hospital on the same day. Early diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes.

The earlier we begin evaluation and management, the better. A CT scan is very important in your case.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
