How can one manage kidney failure and a lung infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mom is on dialysis three times a week for kidney failure, and now she has been diagnosed with a pneumococcal lung infection. She is 55 and already very frail from the dialysis, so I am worried about her ability to fight this off. She has a persistent cough and feels extremely tired. Should she continue dialysis while she is this sick, or does she need adjustments or extra treatments? Are there strong antibiotics that are safe for someone in her condition? I am concerned about how this infection will affect her overall health.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Your mother must not skip dialysis as it is essential for her health. Dialysis is critical to managing her condition, and any disruption could lead to complications. Infections can be particularly dangerous for dialysis patients due to their weakened immune system, so close coordination between her nephrologist and infectious disease specialist is crucial for her treatment plan.

Antibiotics such as Ceftriaxone or Levofloxacin, adjusted based on her kidney function, are often used to treat infections. Ensure she stays hydrated, maintains a nutrient-rich diet, and monitors her breathing closely. If her symptoms worsen, hospitalization may be necessary. Additionally, if she has not received the pneumococcal and flu vaccines, they can help reduce future infection risks. Be in constant communication with her dialysis team for any adjustments needed.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
