Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a woman in my late 30s diagnosed with lupus nephritis. Recently, I have noticed worsening swelling in my legs, increased fatigue, and more foamy urine. My latest lab results show rising proteinuria and creatinine levels, along with low complement levels. I am currently on Mycophenolate mofetil (CellCept) and Prednisone (corticosteroid). Should my treatment plan be adjusted, and are there additional measures I can take to help preserve my kidney function?
Kindly Suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I can understand your concerns.
Your treatment plan may need adjustments to optimize medication and manage your kidney function effectively. Given the increase in proteinuria and creatinine levels, your doctor may modify your current medications or introduce new ones. Immunosuppressive therapy with Mycophenolate mofetil (CellCept) and Prednisone might need to be intensified or altered, while additional immunosuppressants such as Rituximab, Cyclophosphamide, or Tacrolimus could be considered. To further protect kidney function, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) may be added to help reduce proteinuria and slow disease progression.
In addition to medication adjustments, adopting measures to preserve kidney function is crucial. Maintaining optimal blood pressure can alleviate strain on the kidneys, while a protein-restricted diet can minimize their workload. Limiting sodium intake is also important to control blood pressure and fluid retention. Staying well-hydrated supports toxin elimination, and regular medical check-ups will help monitor kidney function, proteinuria levels, and overall disease progression. Lifestyle modifications such as maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular exercise, and managing stress can further contribute to improved kidney health and overall well-being.
I hope I have solved your query.
Thanks.
