How does lupus nephritis affect kidney function over time?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with lupus nephritis last year, and I am worried that my symptoms are getting worse. My legs and face have been swelling more than usual, and I often feel exhausted even after a full night’s sleep. I have also noticed that my urine is becoming foamy.

My latest blood tests show declining kidney function and increased protein levels in my urine. I am currently taking Mycophenolate and Prednisone, but I am scared this could mean my kidneys are failing. Should my treatment plan be adjusted? Are there any other steps I can take to slow down kidney damage?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am sorry to hear that your symptoms are worsening. It is important to address these changes promptly. Here are some steps to consider:

Treatment adjustment:

  1. Consult your nephrologist: Your current medications may need to be adjusted, or additional treatments might be recommended to better manage your lupus nephritis.

Additional measures:

  1. Blood pressure management: Keeping your blood pressure within a healthy range is essential.

  2. Dietary changes: Reducing your sodium and protein intake can help reduce strain on your kidneys.

  3. Regular monitoring: Frequent check-ups and blood tests will help monitor your kidney function and protein levels.

Lifestyle adjustments:

  1. Stay hydrated: Ensure you are drinking plenty of water.

  2. Avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: These medications can worsen kidney function, so it is best to avoid them unless prescribed.

Please consult your healthcare provider to discuss these options and determine the most effective care plan for your condition. If you have further questions, feel free to ask!

I hope this information helps you.

Please let us know if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
