What are symptoms to watch for Lyme disease besides rash?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was out hiking in the woods last weekend, I noticed a weird bullseye-shaped rash on my leg. Apparently, that can be a sign of Lyme disease. From what I have read, Lyme is caused by ticks and can get pretty nasty if not treated early. Joint pain, fatigue, and even neurological issues down the line if it goes undetected. It sounds like a total nightmare. I have not had any other symptoms yet, but I am worried that I may have contracted it from that hike. What are the first signs I need to watch out for besides this rash? Is there a special test I should get or specific antibiotics that treat Lyme best? I have heard horror stories of people struggling for years if it is not caught and treated properly. Let me know if you think I need to get checked out right away or if I am just being paranoid.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

This type of rash, known as Erythema migrans is a classic early sign of Lyme disease transmitted through tick bites. Lyme disease can progress to complications such as joint pain, fatigue, muscle aches, and neurological issues. It is important to seek immediate physical consultation and examination by a doctor.

Tests like ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and Western blot can help confirm diagnosis.

Treatment involves antibiotics prescribed after consultation with the doctor. Additionally, using insect repellent can help prevent tick bites.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
