I am a 28-year-old female living in a heavily wooded area. I am concerned about the risk of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. Recently, I found a tick embedded in my skin after spending time outdoors, which has heightened my anxiety. Could you please explain the symptoms of Lyme disease and how it is typically contracted? What are the recommended steps to take if a tick bite occurs?

Lyme disease is an illness caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi.

Symptoms:

1. Flu-like illnesses like fever, chills, malaise, myalgias, arthralgia, and headache.

2. Tender local adenopathy.

3. Rash.

4. Joint pain.

I suggest you do the following investigations if symptoms persist after a bite:

Step 1: Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) or immunofluorescence assay (IFA) - Total Lyme titer or IgG and IgM titers.

Step 2: Western blot testing.

For treatment,

1. Adult patients with early localized or early disseminated Lyme disease associated with erythema migrans can take Doxycycline (Tetracycline), Amoxicillin (antibiotic), or Cefuroxime axetil (Cephalosporin).

2. Children under eight years and pregnant or nursing women with early localized or early disseminated Lyme disease can take Amoxicillin or Cefuroxime axetil.
