Can lymphoma cause night sweats and hot flashes at 22?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 22 and have been having unexplained night sweats and episodes of feeling suddenly very hot over the last few months. I thought it was stress or hormonal changes at first, but now my doctors are investigating the possibility of lymphoma.

This has made me wonder why hot flashes and night sweats can occur before a diagnosis at my age, because I did not realise that cancer symptoms could present this way.

The uncertainty of waiting for answers has been making me very nervous. I would really appreciate some guidance as to why these symptoms occur and if they are common in lymphoma

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand how stressful and scary this uncertainty can be, especially at your age. It is necessary to bear in mind that night sweats and episodes of sudden heat attacks can happen for various reasons, and these reasons include infections, stress, hormonal changes, anxiety, autoimmune diseases, and even cancer (for example, lymphoma).

In lymphoma cases, such symptoms as drenching night sweats, fevers, and unexpected weight loss are often termed B symptoms. This condition happens because the body produces inflammatory substances known as cytokines, which affect the ability of the body to regulate its temperature.

Doctors would consider the possibility of lymphoma when one shows these symptoms if they are persistent, unexplained, or accompanied by other signs like swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, fever, or weight loss. But just because you have night sweats does not necessarily mean that you have lymphoma.

There are a lot of benign diseases that can cause these symptoms, especially in younger patients. You are only 22, so it is possible that hormonal problems or stress-related symptoms are causing your night sweats, but it is wise of your physicians to eliminate other possibilities as well.If lymphoma is found, there are many types that can be treated very effectively.

In the meantime, concentrate on taking all the tests recommended by your physicians and see whether you develop other symptoms like fever, weight loss, swelling of the lymph nodes, or increasing fatigue. It is quite natural that you feel anxious about this situation, but please remember that your physicians are conducting these examinations in order to come to the right diagnosis.

Thank you.
