Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I was told I have MAC lung disease, and it is hard for me to breathe and do daily things. I am already taking antibiotics, but they are making me feel sick and weak. This infection recurs even after prolonged treatment.
Are there any newer treatments that work faster or with fewer side effects?
I heard about surgery. When do doctors decide to remove a lung part?
I am scared it might spread more.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I read your query and understand your concern.
MAC lung disease can indeed be very challenging, especially when symptoms affect your breathing and daily life. Regarding your treatment: the standard therapy involves a combination of antibiotics taken over many months, often 12 months or more, which unfortunately can cause side effects like nausea, weakness, and fatigue. Currently, there are no dramatically faster treatments, but doctors sometimes adjust medications or doses to help manage side effects better. It is important to report all symptoms to your care team so they can help you tolerate the therapy as much as possible.
MAC (Mycobacterium avium complex) infections can recur even after long treatment, which is why close monitoring with follow-up imaging and sputum tests is essential. As for surgery, removing part of the lung is generally considered only in specific cases, such as if there is localized disease that is not responding well to medication, or if there are complications such as severe lung damage or persistent infection in one area. Surgery is not common but can be helpful in carefully selected patients to improve outcomes.
It is natural to worry about spread, but with appropriate treatment and close follow-up, many patients manage their disease successfully. Please continue to communicate openly with your pulmonologist about side effects and any new symptoms. Together, you can adjust your treatment plan to find the best balance between effectiveness and quality of life.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
