Why does a person feel numb and find no joy in their life?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I feel completely lost and overwhelmed by darkness. Every day is a struggle just to breathe. I no longer find any meaning or joy in life. I feel numb and empty inside, as if I am slowly fading away. The pain is constant, and I do not see any way out. Sometimes, I think about ending it all because I do not believe things will ever get better. I am not asking for help anymore. I just want the suffering to stop. Please, I truly do not know what else to do.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to iclinic.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Thank you for seeking help from a psychiatrist.

I can understand how difficult your situation must feel right now. Based on what you describe, you may be experiencing Major Depressive Disorder (a condition where a person feels persistent sadness, loss of interest, and emotional emptiness that affects daily life).

There are non-pharmacological (non-medicine) approaches to help manage depression. Please consider following these guidelines; they may support your recovery alongside medical treatment:

  • Daily exercise: Try to do physical activity for 30 to 45 minutes every day, such as walking, jogging, yoga, or light stretching. Exercise naturally boosts chemicals in the brain that help improve mood.

  • Meditation: Practice mindfulness or meditation for about 20 minutes daily. Sit comfortably, focus on your breathing, and observe your thoughts without trying to stop them. This can help reduce stress and improve emotional balance.

  • Healthy diet: Eat fresh, balanced, home-cooked meals. Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses, and lean proteins. Avoid processed or junk foods high in sugar and unhealthy fats, which can worsen mood swings.

  • Hydration: Drink enough water throughout the day to keep your body and mind healthy.

  • Quality social time: Try to spend time with supportive friends or family members every day. If you live far from them, make regular phone or video calls to stay connected. Social support plays a significant role in recovery.

  • Engage in hobbies: Spend time on creative activities you enjoy, such as reading books, writing in a journal, painting, drawing, gardening, cooking, or learning new skills like a language or musical instrument. These help bring moments of joy and purpose.

  • Adequate sleep: Aim for seven to eight hours of good-quality sleep every night. Try to keep a regular sleep schedule.

  • Avoid harmful substances: Stay away from tobacco, alcohol, or any recreational drugs, as they can worsen depression and interfere with treatment.

  • Positive mindset: Remind yourself to live your life fully rather than just going through the motions. Try to cultivate boldness and self-confidence, even in small ways each day.

Medical treatment: Along with lifestyle changes, starting antidepressant medicines (medications that help correct chemical imbalances in the brain) as advised by your psychiatrist is often necessary and effective. Please do not stop or adjust medication without consulting your doctor.

Recommended investigations:

  • CBC (Complete Blood Count): Helps check for anemia or infections.

  • RBS (Random Blood Sugar): Screens for diabetes.

  • Thyroid profile: Checks thyroid gland function, as thyroid disorders can affect mood.

  • Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3 levels: Deficiencies can contribute to fatigue and depressive symptoms.

If you ever feel overwhelmed or have thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out immediately to someone you trust or contact a mental health helpline. You do not have to face this alone.

If you would like, I can also help create a daily routine or self-care plan based on your lifestyle. Please let me know if you would like that.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
