Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
We recently got a warning about meningococcal disease. It sounds scary since it is linked to viral meningitis. I am wondering if the meningococcal vaccine works for it. Also, at what age should someone get this shot? Can my father, who is 65, get it? The meningococcal vaccine covers all types of meningitis or just the bacterial one? Is it effective for viral meningitis too? My father is quite concerned because he is 65 and wants to know if he can get vaccinated to protect himself. Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
It is fine to be concerned about meningococcal disease, especially with a warning from public health authorities. Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitides, which can lead to bacterial meningitis. Viral meningitis is caused by viruses and is generally less severe than bacterial meningitis. The meningococcal vaccine does not protect against viral meningitis. The meningococcal vaccine is effective in preventing bacterial meningitis. It does not cover viral meningitis or meningitis caused by other bacteria. Must get physically examined by a doctor. Adults who are at increased risk for meningococcal disease should also be vaccinated. This includes:
- Those with certain medical conditions.
- Those traveling to areas where the disease is common.
- Those exposed during outbreaks.
If he is at increased risk, your dad can get the meningococcal vaccine at 65. He needs to discuss his specific risk factors with his doctor. I hope you find this information helpful.
Thank you.
