Do iron supplements cause prolonged menstrual bleeding?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 29-year-old female and a single parent. My last menstruation started on February 5,. After taking Sangobion iron vitamins, my next period came early on February 25, and has continued until now, March 18, almost one month.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to iCliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Having a menstrual period lasting nearly a month is not normal and may have several causes. Since your last regular period began on February 5, and you started bleeding again on February 25, identifying the cause is essential. Possible reasons include hormonal imbalances, uterine fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, endometrial hyperplasia, or blood clotting disorders. While iron supplements like Sangobion do not cause bleeding, underlying conditions may contribute to prolonged periods.
Seeking medical attention is necessary. A doctor may recommend tests such as a complete blood count (CBC) to check for anemia, hormone tests for estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid function, and an ultrasound to assess for fibroids or endometrial abnormalities. If you experience dizziness, weakness, or extreme fatigue, iron deficiency anemia may already be present. Temporary remedies like vitamin C, bioflavonoids, ginger or turmeric tea, and staying hydrated may help, but proper diagnosis and treatment are essential.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
