Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had retina detachment in my left eye before three months. I have silicone oil in the eye. Vision is not bad, but I have a problem with depth perception. Everything is smaller in the bad eye. I see people with small heads and big bodies. Is this normal?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concerns. The main problems you mentioned are depth perception problems, and distorted images also called metamorphopsia. Depth perception occurs when both the eyes see well, it is hampered when one eye has blurred vision or squint. Metamorphopsia happens when the central area of the retina (macula) is affected or the retina becomes edematous due to the effects of surgery. These problems can be troublesome but do not indicate any specific information regarding the progression or recurrence of retinal detachment. I suggest reviewing with your ophthalmologist to clear your doubts. I hope this helps you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I asked my doctor, and he said that this effect was the result of silicone oil in the eye.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Silicon oil can cause blurring, but metamorphosia is characteristically a symptom of the macula. We infact get an OCT to see the precise condition of the macula. Please try to attach the scans whenever you can. I hope you get well soon.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I have sent you an OCT scan of the left eye.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I went through your OCT scans. The macula shows a little edema, such changes are expected after retinal surgery. The optic nerve head shows very severely thinning of nerve fibers. This change is present in both your eyes. If you been asked to get your intraocular pressure and visual fields checked, please go ahead with the tests. In case you have been already put on antiglaucoma drops, please continue with those. Given these findings, the changes that you are suffering from can be caused both by the silicon oil and surgery and also the optic nerve damage. I hope this helps you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
