Metaplasia

Metaplasia is when one type of specialized cell changes into another kind of specialized cell. It can occur anywhere in the body. Metaplasia occurs due to an alternate differentiation pathway of stem cells. External stressors induce different gene expressions promoting differentiation to a different cellular pathway. The common types of metaplasia include intestinal metaplasia, squamous metaplasia, oncocytic metaplasia, and tubal metaplasia. An example of metaplasia is smoking causes the replacement of normal columnar bronchial epithelium by squamous epithelium.
