What can cause constipation and skin rashes in babies?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My baby is breastfed. For about one month, she has had mucus in her stool. The pediatrician previously gave us a laxative, but it caused her severe pain, and she cried with tears, so I stopped giving it.

For about one week, she has not been able to poop on her own. I have given her a suppository every three days, and when she does poop, it is large and contains a lot of mucus.

She also has a red rash on her neck and chest, which has spread in the last few days and become redder. Additionally, she does not seem to eat as much as before, but otherwise, she is very happy and playful. For the past few days, she has also been rubbing her eyes, which seem a bit watery.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

I need to know the age of your child. According to history, it is most likely a milk protein allergy or functional constipation. The rash may be fungal or viral, and the eye rubbing could be due to a viral infection.

Stop regular use of suppositories and use them only if prescribed and as a last option. Give a trial of a dairy-free diet for the mother (if breastfeeding). For two to three weeks, eliminate milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and cream from the mother's diet. This helps confirm a milk protein allergy.

If the baby has started solids, ensure:

  1. Adequate hydration.

  2. Gentle tummy massage.

  3. Bicycle leg movements for constipation.

For neck and chest rash:

  1. Keep the area dry, clean, and free of sweat.

  2. You may apply PEDs cream.

For watery eyes and rubbing:

  1. Clean with clean water.

  2. Avoid dust and smoke exposure.

However, if redness, discharge, or swelling develops, an eye examination is required. Immediately check with the pediatrician if there is blood in the stool, a fever, or if the rash worsens.

I hope that this answers your query.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
