Can Minoxidil be used for treating hair thinning?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 43-year-old female, and I have recently noticed significant thinning of my hair, especially around the temples and crown, much like what my dad experienced before he went bald. I have been reading about male pattern hair loss and came across Minoxidil as a treatment option. Could you please help me understand if this is suitable for me, how it should be used, and if there are any side effects I should be aware of? I am really concerned and would appreciate your guidance on the right approach to take. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern. Minoxidil is a treatment for hair loss, and it is used to promote hair growth and slow down the progression of thinning hair. It is effective for androgenetic alopecia (a genetically predisposed condition resulting in a hyperactive sensitivity to androgenic hormones).

Minoxidil helps by:

  1. Increasing blood flow to the hair follicles.

  2. Revitalize shrunken hair follicles.

  3. Extend the growth phase of the hair cycle and encourage thicker hair growth over time.

However, Minoxidil must be used upon physical examination by a dermatologist. The following are the ways to apply it.

  1. You should apply the product to a clean, dry scalp.

  2. If you are using the solution, apply it with the dropper and gently massage it.

  3. If you are using the foam, part your hair to expose the thinning areas, apply the foam, and gently massage it into the scalp.

  4. After applying Minoxidil, wash your hands thoroughly.

The side effects include scalp irritation, dryness, flaking, or itching where the product is applied.

In some cases, increased hair shedding may occur. Results with Minoxidil take a few months to be seen and need patience.

I hope this information will help you.

Kindly revert in case of queries.

Thank you.
