Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I did a pregnancy test last week, and it was positive. The next day at work I notice pinkish spots when I wipe. The next morning I started heavy bleeding with small clots, but I had no pain. The bleeding only lasted for three days. I need help. I am not sure if I am still pregnant or if I had a miscarriage.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Sorry to hear about that and it sounds like a miscarriage. That day when urine was tested, mostly the second line was not as dark as the first. It means the hormone level was not high enough. Once you have heavy bleeding, it means the inner lining of the uterus has gone, and so pregnancy cannot stay on. The most common cause of such an early bleeding or miscarriage is anembryonic gestation or blighted ovum. Here, the egg or the sperm had some defect, and so, the embryo or the baby had some congenital problem compromising its health. Hence, it was not producing enough of hormones to support itself in the uterus.

The implantation or attachment to uterus was not strong enough. So, you had the bleeding as support to the uterine lining from the baby was weak. Do not worry; this is like an accident. It will not occur repeatedly, and you cannot do anything to avoid it. The chance of next healthy pregnancy is 97 %, so cheer up. Just for confirmation have a home urine pregnancy test after bleeding fully stops. If the pregnancy has failed, then the line will be lighter or have disappeared. Also, you cannot see anything on the scan.

1. Give a gap of one to two months before next pregnancy. It is a belief that some reason that caused abortion will be there in body, so let it go.

2. Have daily one tablet of Folic acid for one month before attempting pregnancy as this will reduce chances of fetal abnormality and abortion.

Thank you.
