What precautions can be taken to prevent monkeypox?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am worried about the recent outbreak of the Monkeypox virus in many parts of the world. I am worried that this disease will spread to other countries. I live away and my parents live alone. I am sure it would not take much time to spread. So what should I tell my parents to be alert of, and what precautions do they need to take? They are both diabetic, and my father has hypertension. Are they at increased risk? It would be best if the government or local authorities took some initiative to stop the spread. I am concerned that this might end up like the COVID days.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, and objects, and cleaning your hands after touching surfaces or objects that may be contaminated can help. Currently there is no treatment approved specifically for monkeypox virus (MPXV) infections. For most patients with m-pox who have intact immune systems and do not have a skin disease, supportive care, and pain control will help them recover without medical treatment.
People with m-pox should follow these recommendations until the m-pox infection has resolved:
-
Friends, family, or others without an essential need to be in the home should not visit.
-
Avoid close contact with others.
-
Avoid close contact with pets in the home and other animals.
The JYNNEOS vaccine is recommended for the prevention of m-pox. Getting both doses provides the best protection. You should get two doses four weeks apart. Even if it has been longer than four weeks since you got the first vaccine dose, you should get the second dose as soon as possible.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
