Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 45-year-old male, and I have recently been diagnosed with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. My doctor has prescribed a combination of medications, including Rifampin and Bedaquiline. Can you provide more information about the treatment plan for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis? Specifically, what are the expectations and potential side effects of these medications, particularly Rifampin and Bedaquiline? Additionally, are there any lifestyle changes or precautions I should be aware of during this treatment?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for reaching out to us. I am sorry about your medical condition. Multidrug-resistant TB is caused by Tuberculous bacteria that are resistant to at least Isoniazid and Rifampin, which are the two most potent tuberculous drugs that can fight against mycobacteria species. The newly reviewed treatment plan MDR-TB is as follows:

  1. 6-month treatment regimen composed of Bedaquiline, Pretomanid, Linezolid (600 mg), and Moxifloxacin (BPaLM) rather than the 9-month or longer (18-month) regimens for MDR-TB.
  2. The potential side effects of Rifampin are as follows: Elevated liver enzymes, rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, and redness of your urine (this is not a side effect), while Bedaquiline side effects are headache, joint pain, and chest pains.
  3. Yes, the lifestyle changes are given at least a 12-hour gap between MDR-TB medications and other medications; do not smoke, drink alcohol, and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.

If your symptoms persist, schedule another appointment for follow-up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

Thanks for using icliniq and have a nice day.
