How can a laptop user relieve neck and shoulder pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I sit with a laptop for a long time. Recently, I got my eyes tested and was told that I have computer vision syndrome, and my eye muscles are weak. I was advised to take some eye exercises along with eye drops.

Over the last three weeks, I have had a stiff neck with mild pain in my right shoulder. The pain is not much hindering my day-to-day work, but I can move my arm freely. I have heaviness in my head just above the part where the skull begins. I also have heaviness and a feeling like some nerve is compressing when lying flat on the bed.

I have mild pain on top of my head and temples (portion above ears), especially when I work on my laptop. This is not regular pain. Also, recently, I had all my blood tests, and all were normal.

Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern. Computer eye syndrome is prevalent in people who use a laptop or computer. Your doctor's diagnosis and treatment, including eye exercises, are very accurate. As you have complained about pain in the lower region of the head, it is called cervical pain.

At present, you can do your day-to-day work, and when you lie down, you feel some stiffness in the shoulder region and heaviness in the temporal region. All complaints are related to each other. Due to the stress on the eyes and continuous sitting with the head held straight, the shoulders also have no movement.

The lower region of the neck, the cervical region, is also stiff. This is called an occupational hazard. My advice is to exercise the neck and both shoulders. In the early stages, physiotherapy in a physiotherapy center is the best way. You can rub a Rubefacient.

Go to the massage center once a week. If pain is unbearable, take one Paracetamol after meals.

I hope this answers this query.

Let me know if I need to assist you further.

Thank you.
