Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am 36 years old, and my urologist mentioned that if I need surgery, it will be very difficult for me to decide between a neo-bladder and a stoma bag.
To be honest, I did not fully understand what he was saying during that appointment. Now, after reading about the options, I am even more confused. How do people choose between the two options?
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
A neobladder is an artificial bladder created in the body, which works as a reservoir for the purposes of urination, normally used for those individuals who have difficulty using their biological bladders due to bladder cancer.
When using the neobladder, one will be able to urinate using the urethra without necessarily having to rely on a bag outside. However, this is a complex procedure, which requires one to undertake training of the bladder.
However, a less complicated surgical procedure that is faster, with a reduced risk of urinary complications, would be the ileal conduit (which requires the use of a stoma bag). Most people are comfortable with this method and live a good-quality life, although they have to wear a urostomy bag always.
I would advise that you choose the method that fits into your lifestyle and expectations instead of avoiding the stoma method.
Feel free to contact me for any other questions.
Thank you.
