What causes neck pain, jaw pain, and pain under the chin?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been suffering from an unexplained pain in my mouth for around six months. My dentist referred me for a full mouth X-ray at my local hospital last year, which showed no abnormalities. He thinks I have a burning mouth syndrome. I have neck pain, jaw pain, and pain under my chin. I am now unable to smile properly, as the right side of my face feels numb. My GP referred me for a CT brain scan, which was normal. Again, I consulted a dentist who said that everything looked normal, apart from my salivary glands which looked a little inflamed. I am very concerned, but not sure how to pursue the matter further. I am currently on Lansoprazole. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Could you please attach the full mouth X-ray that was taken? It seems to be very strange that no doctors have been able to find the exact source of pain. It might be either due to some nerve compression or trigeminal neuralgia (a long-term pain disorder that results in sudden, severe facial pain), which could cause pain like this. An X-ray could have helped me to understand better and find a cause for your pain. I suggest you consult an endodontist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

I hope this information will help you. Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
