Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
We just received confirmation that my six-year-old son has neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). The geneticist pointed out café-au-lait spots that I had not even noticed, and explained that the bumps under his skin will likely increase with age.
What is keeping me up at night is not knowing what lies ahead, will his case be mild or severe? His teacher mentioned that he is struggling with math and becomes frustrated easily. Could this be related to NF1?
The doctor mentioned something briefly about brain tumors being a possibility, but then had to rush off to his next patient. I have been googling and terrifying myself with worst-case scenarios.
Please help me with the following questions:
He is already asking why he looks different from other kids, and I do not know what to tell him about his future.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and can understand your concern.
Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder. It can affect brain development. Developmental delays, motor skill delays, psychomotor impairments, and cognitive impairments are commonly seen in children with this condition.
Physiotherapy, cognitive enhancement therapies, and psychomotor skill training can help children overcome some of these challenges.
Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for this disorder.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
