Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 35-year-old male. As expecting parents, my partner and I are eager to learn more about the newborn screening process and its significance in ensuring the health and well-being of our soon-to-arrive baby. We would greatly appreciate your insights and guidance on this essential aspect. What is newborn screening, and how is it typically conducted shortly after birth? How is newborn screening different from routine pediatric check-ups, and at what point is it typically performed after birth? Are newborn screening tests mandatory? How long does it usually take to receive the results of newborn screening tests, and what happens if a condition is detected?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I understand your concern.
I am very sorry about your medical condition. Do not worry I am here to take care of you. Newborn screening is a state-run healthcare initiative that encompasses the process of parental education, infant screening, appropriate follow-up, diagnostic testing, disease management, and continued evaluation. The newborn screen itself is a specific set of laboratory evaluations and point-of-care examinations performed on newborn infants in an attempt to identify clinically occult but potentially serious disorders that require expedient intervention. It is typically conducted with physical examination and laboratory equipment to assess hearing loss, critical cardiac heart defects, and metabolic, hematologic, endocrine, and other inheritable disorders. It is not different from the routine pediatric check-ups and newborn screening is done immediately 72 hours after birth. Yes, newborn screening is mandatory to assess any abnormalities, and the results depend on the test done. The duration is between two and three weeks. If abnormal conditions are detected, they are treated immediately to correct any disability. Schedule another appointment for follow-up via chat, phone, or video consultation.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
