Patient's Query
Hello doctor, My nephew, who is four and a half years old, suddenly started vomiting continuously and has had loose stools since yesterday evening, and he looks tired and dull now. He is not eating anything and just wants to lie down. I read about norovirus in kids online because his school had a few students absent recently with the same symptoms. His pediatrician gave him ORS (oral rehydration solution) and some syrup for vomiting, but I am scared that it might be something more. He had a mild fever of 100.8 F at night but now has no fever. But he has still passed stools four times since morning and smells very bad, like rotten eggs. Is this how norovirus behaves? I am also worried that he can spread it to other family members. I have a 10-month-old baby at home, too. What should I do at home to stop the infection? His stool test was done, but reports did not come yet. Please guide me quickly. I am very anxious. Please help. Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
It is a tough time for you because there are two children in your house, and the symptoms seem like norovirus. Vomiting, diarrhea, and fever are all symptoms of this virus. Follow these:
1. Infectious persons should stay in isolation until they are no longer contagious.
2. Maintain hygiene strictly before preparing food and after using the washroom. Always wash thoroughly contaminated surfaces after vomiting or diarrhea. Wash the contaminated clothes thoroughly and keep the contaminated utensils separate. Remember, the virus can be transmitted through stool.
3. Eat easily digestible food, bland food like rice, potatoes, crackers, bananas, and soup.
4. Always rehydrate with ORS (oral rehydration solution) or Pedialyte solution. If your child cannot take fluids orally, then seek medical attention for IV (intravenous) fluids. Monitor the signs of dehydration like dizziness, dry mouth, and decreased urination. If any are present, seek urgent admission to the hospital.
5. Disinfect your house with bleach, especially door knobs, sinks, and handles.
6. Lastly, do not panic. Norovirus is a self-limiting virus that resolves spontaneously. The main treatment is rehydration, and it is the most important.
I hope this answers your query.
Let me assist you further.
Thanks and regards.
