How to manage a norovirus outbreak in a family?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Our family reunion has turned into a full-blown norovirus outbreak. It started with my grandmother, and now, eight of us are down with relentless vomiting, watery diarrhea, and fevers (classic norovirus symptoms). I am 27 years old and have never had it this bad before. I cannot even keep down water, and my temperature is around 100.8 degrees Fahrenheit.

Everyone is struggling to stay hydrated. We have tried Gatorade and crackers, but nothing stays down. I am especially worried about my uncle, who has kidney issues. Dehydration could be dangerous for him. Despite thorough bleach cleaning, the virus is spreading fast.

How do we manage this with so many family members sick at once? Any advice on keeping everyone as safe and hydrated as possible?

Please help me.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

There is no specific treatment for norovirus infection. Recovery generally depends on the health of your immune system. In most people, the illness usually resolves within a few days. It is important to replace lost fluids.

Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water before and after caring for or cleaning up after the sick person. Don't use alcohol-based hand sanitizers because they won't kill the germs.

A number of treatment strategies have been reported to improve chronic norovirus infection in immunocompromised individuals, including adjustment of immunosuppressive therapy (IST) drug types and dose levels, drugs approved for other pathogens, and passive γ-globulin therapy.

It is time for the emergency admission if you or someone in your care is suffering from the following:

  1. A temperature over 102 degrees Fahrenheit for more than two days that does not respond to medicine.

  2. Severe dehydration (symptoms include dark urine or lack of urine).

  3. Dizziness or lightheadedness on standing.

Feel free to follow up with any further questions or concerns.

Thank you.
