Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been diagnosed with norovirus, and I am in my second trimester of pregnancy. I am worried about how this infection might affect my baby. Can you tell me if there is any risk to my pregnancy? I have been experiencing severe vomiting and diarrhea; how can I prevent dehydration, and are there any safe fluids or electrolytes I should focus on? Are the medications prescribed safe for me and my baby, and are there any side effects I need to watch for? How long does it usually take to recover, and should I be concerned if my symptoms persist? Is it normal to feel so weak, and what can I do to regain energy while still eating cautiously? Should I avoid any specific foods or drinks during this time? Lastly, what warning signs, like reduced fetal movement, high fever, or persistent abdominal pain, should prompt me to seek immediate medical attention? Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
The norovirus does not transmit to the baby however the effect can affect your baby. Usually dehydration. The treatment plan for norovirus:
1. Visit the hospital which is an emergency, or see your gynecologist.
2. Take IV (intravenous) fluids and antiemetics.
3. Get an obstetric scan.
4. Take probiotics.
5. Tablet Zinc 40mg daily.
Take food as tolerated and ensure good hygiene with regular hand washing. In about less than two weeks the infection should resolve. You can eat any kind of food. Stay hydrated too. I hope you find this helpful.
Thank you.
