What are the symptoms of norovirus infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 29-year-old male recovering from a recent norovirus infection that began with severe vomiting, watery diarrhea, and abdominal cramps about a week ago. While the acute symptoms have subsided, I am still experiencing fatigue, occasional nausea, and a lack of appetite. My blood tests showed mild dehydration with elevated BUN (25 mg/dL) and slightly low potassium levels (3.2 mmol/L). Stool samples confirmed the presence of norovirus, and an abdominal ultrasound showed no signs of other abnormalities. I have been following a rehydration regimen with oral electrolyte solutions and a bland diet, but my energy levels remain low, and I have lost about six pounds. I am concerned about whether these lingering symptoms are normal or if they indicate any complications, and I would like to know how long it typically takes to fully recover. Should I be considering any additional tests or treatments to speed up recovery?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

The symptoms are common after a norovirus infection. Mild dehydration and electrolyte imbalances (low potassium) are typical during recovery, and rehydration with oral solutions is crucial. Weight loss of six pounds is also not unusual but should be monitored. Recovery time can vary, but most people start feeling better within one to two weeks.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, consider seeing your doctor for further tests (For example - repeat electrolyte levels, and kidney function), and possibly a more tailored treatment plan to address fatigue and restore balance.

I hope this helps.

Take care.

Regards.
