Can norovirus infection affect my cancer recovery process?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been feeling extremely unwell for the past couple of days with severe vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fatigue. I was told it might be norovirus, and the symptoms have really taken a toll on me. I am also a patient with a history of squamous cell carcinoma, which was treated a few months ago with surgical excision, and I am currently under routine follow-up. I am worried that this infection could weaken my immune system or interfere with my cancer recovery. I’m struggling to stay hydrated and keep any food down. Please tell me,

  • Should I be taking any special precautions because of my cancer history?

  • Could this impact my overall condition or healing process?

  • Is there a need for hospitalization in my case?

  • Can I manage this at home safely?

  • What signs should I look out for that might suggest complications?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Norovirus is an extremely contagious and self-limiting infection. It can infect all members of your household from a single source. Serious dehydration may occur if you do not drink enough water.

Symptoms of severe dehydration include

  1. Lethargy or decreased activity levels.

  2. Pale and sunken eyes.

  3. Cold extremities.

  4. Increased breathing.

  5. Increase in the heart rate.

  6. Irritability, drowsiness, confusion, dark yellow urine, or infrequent urination.

  7. Diminished skin elasticity.

If any of these symptoms are observed, you should visot emergency as soon as possible.

Given your significant history of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which was addressed through surgical intervention, please confirm whether you are undergoing any additional treatment for the SCC. If there are no other medications, it is essential to follow the standard treatments for the norovirus infection. Monitor for signs of dehydration and respond appropriately.

You may consider the following recommendations:

Oral rehydration solutions (ORS), increased fluid consumption, and avoidance of sugary beverages.

  • Antiemetics such as Ondansetron for nausea and vomiting.

  • Imodium (anti-diarrheal medicine) for diarrhea.

  • Antispasmodics like Cyclopam.

  • Consume easily digestible foods such as rice, soups, toast, and fruits.

  • Incorporate yogurt to support normal gut flora.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
