How to manage symptoms of norovirus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 28-year-old man working in a busy restaurant. Three days ago, I started feeling nauseous, and since yesterday, I have been experiencing severe diarrhea and vomiting. I feel extremely weak and have barely been able to drink water without throwing up. A few of my coworkers have called in sick with similar symptoms. Could this be norovirus from handling food or being in a crowded environment? How can I recover quickly, and do I need medical attention?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The symptoms you have described could indeed be caused by norovirus, but it is also possible that they are due to other infections like Salmonella typhi (typhoid fever). These types of illnesses are often transmitted through the fecal-oral route, meaning prevention involves strict hygiene practices. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the restroom, avoid sharing food, and ensure that meals are freshly cooked and hygienically prepared.

To manage dehydration caused by diarrhea and vomiting, it is essential to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes. You should drink oral rehydration solutions (ORS) or homemade alternatives like lemon water with a pinch of salt and sugar. Medical attention becomes necessary if symptoms are severe, such as extreme weakness, frequent episodes of vomiting and diarrhea, or an inability to keep fluids down. In such cases, antibiotics (if bacterial infection is suspected) and intravenous (IV) fluids are often required to stabilize the condition.

To guide you better, I would like to ask a few additional questions:

  1. How many times have you passed stool today?
  2. How many episodes of vomiting have you had?
  3. Do you have any fever, abdominal pain, or other symptoms?
  4. Have you noticed blood in your stool or vomit?

Please provide these details, and let me know if there is anything else you would like to discuss. I am here to help. Take care!

Thank you.
