How to prevent norovirus transmission?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 5-year-old niece just tested positive for norovirus, which has been a nightmare.

  1. She can not keep anything down and she is losing so much fluids. we took her to the ER (emergency room) last night for an IV (intravenous), but now she is back home and still so weak. how long does this usually last?

  2. Should we get another test to see if it is gone?

  3. My parents live with us and they are both diabetic – how do we keep them from getting it?

  4. We cleaned everything with disinfectant but this virus spread like crazy. also, can it spread through food if she does not wash her hands properly?

  5. What is the best way to stop norovirus from spreading at home?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Duration of norovirus infection:

  1. Typical duration: Norovirus symptoms usually last 1 to 3 days, but some individuals may experience prolonged symptoms.

  2. Recovery time: Your niece may take 3 to 5 days to recover fully, but monitoring her hydration and overall health is essential.

Testing and confirmation:

  1. No need for retesting: Norovirus tests are typically only done to confirm the initial diagnosis. Repeat testing is not usually necessary.

  2. Focus on symptom management: Instead, focus on managing your niece's symptoms, ensuring she stays hydrated, and monitoring her overall health.

Preventing transmission to vulnerable family members:

  1. Strict hand hygiene: Ensure everyone in the household washes their hands frequently with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom, before eating, and after interacting with your niece.

  2. Disinfect high-touch areas: Continue disinfecting high-touch areas, such as doorknobs, light switches, and countertops, with a bleach-based solution.

  3. Separate living arrangements: Consider separating your niece from your parents temporarily to reduce the risk of transmission.

  4. Monitor your parents' health: Keep a close eye on your parents' health, and seek medical attention immediately if they show any symptoms of norovirus.

Food handling and hygiene:

  1. Proper hand washing: Ensure your niece washes her hands thoroughly before handling food or eating.

  2. Avoid preparing food: Avoid having your niece prepare food for others until she's fully recovered.

  3. Clean and disinfect food surfaces: Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces that come into contact with food.

Additional precautions:

  1. Laundry and cleaning: Wash your niece's bedding, towels, and clothing in hot water, and dry them on a hot setting. Clean and disinfect any surfaces that may have come into contact with her stool or vomit.

  2. Avoid sharing personal items: Avoid sharing personal items, such as utensils, towels, or drinking glasses, to reduce the risk of transmission.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
