How can I restore my gut microbiome?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I recently had norovirus enteropathy, and even though my acute symptoms have resolved, I am still dealing with chronic malabsorption and weight loss. My doctor mentioned this could be due to long-term intestinal barrier damage.
- Are there any advanced therapies, like probiotic-based treatments or intestinal stem cell therapy, to restore gut function?
- Should I be concerned about developing post-infectious IBS or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)?
- How long does it take for the gut lining to fully recover, and is there a way to speed up healing?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I am glad to hear that you have come back from the acute attack. The virus usually affects the lining of intestinal tissue. It usually resolves within one week to a maximum of two weeks, but if post-infectious IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or SIBO (small intestinal bacterial outgrowth) occurs, then you would have abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea. But the fact is you have no abdominal pain, according to you.
So, I do not think the disease you mentioned is of concern. Follow these rules and maybe you will be fine within the next week or two weeks.
-
Eat a balanced diet of easily digestible food like bread, toast, rice, bananas, and soup.
-
Drink sips of water frequently to prevent dehydration.
-
Take probiotics like yogurt and kimchi and also prebiotics like onion, garlic, and oats to restore gut health.
-
Take adequate rest and limit physical activity.
-
Manage stress.
But if the symptoms persist still then you need to talk to a physician in person. Also, if you notice signs of dehydration like dizziness, decreased urination, or dry mouth, urgently seek medical attention.
I hope this has helped you.
Please feel free to reach out to me again if you have further queries.
Thank you.
