Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 72-year-old mother got norovirus a few days ago, and she is still very weak. She tries to sip water but says she feels too nauseous to drink much. I am worried she is not getting enough fluids. We have given her broths and a bit of juice, but she is barely touching anything. Are there any drinks or remedies that might be easier for her to keep down? How do we know if she is too dehydrated and needs medical help? We want to avoid a hospital visit if possible, but I do not want to risk her getting worse. Please suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Norovirus is a highly contagious, self-limiting infection where symptoms can last for up to 10 days. Complete recovery can be delayed considering her age. Also, some of the symptoms, like extended diarrhea and abdominal pain, can be due to post-norovirus IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Dehydration could be serious if water intake is not maintained. Signs of severe dehydration:
Lethargy or less activity than usual.
Pale and sunken eyes.
Cold hands or feet.
Faster breathing and heart rate.
Irritability, drowsiness, or confusion.
Dark yellow pee or less frequent urination.
Reduced skin elasticity.
If any of these signs are seen, please go to emergency. I suggest you take the following:
ORS (oral rehydration salt), increased fluid intake, and avoid sugary drinks.
Anti-emetics like Ondansetron for vomiting.
Imodium for diarrhea.
Anti-spasmodic like Cyclopamine.
Eat easy-to-digest food items like rice, soups, toast, and fruits.
Yogurt to maintain normal gut flora.
Many times norovirus infection does not need hospitalization. It can be managed totally at home just by maintaining the hydration and electrolyte levels. Hence ORS is the best treatment to manage dehydration. I hope this will help you.
Thank you.
