When will full recovery from norovirus occur?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a nasty stomach virus last week with vomiting, diarrhea, and chills. I am feeling a bit better now, but I am still weak, and my stomach is not 100 percent. I am drinking plenty of fluids, but I still get dizzy sometimes. Is this normal after norovirus? How long does it usually take to get back to feeling normal? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Glad to hear you are looking into the contagious period of norovirus! It typically resolves within 2-3 days, though some people may take up to two weeks to fully recover. Post-infectious gastroenteritis is common, as the virus affects the lining of the intestinal tissue. Here is a refined version of your advice:

Maintain good hygiene: Wash your hands frequently, especially after using the restroom and before eating.

Stay hydrated: Rehydrate with oral rehydration solutions or electrolyte-rich drinks like coconut water or sports drinks.

Eat easily digestible foods: Stick to bland, low-fat, and non-spicy foods. Avoid greasy or heavy meals.

Consider probiotics: Incorporate probiotic-rich foods like yogurt to help restore gut health.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
