Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had a 20-week ultrasound, and the nuchal fold measured 4.9 mm. Should I be concerned? It is at the upper limit of the normal range.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
A nuchal fold measurement of 4.9 mm is at the normal upper limit; however, a low-risk Non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) is reassuring. The fetal position and the scanning technique can influence the measurements. Marginal cord insertion usually requires monitoring for fetal growth, but in most cases, it does not cause complications. Your doctor may recommend follow-up ultrasounds.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
At the 12-week scan, the nuchal translucency measurement was 1.81 mm. At the 20-week scan, the nuchal fold was measured at 4.9 mm. The non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) was low-risk, which was reassuring. I think I am trying to come to terms with the increase to the 4.9 mm measurement in the 20-week scan, as the 12-week scan's nuchal translucency seemed very good. I do understand other factors that could influence the nuchal fold measurement, as you mentioned. From what I can see on the reports and even the image of the baby’s head (from the 20-week scan), everything seems to be looking healthy. This baby girl does seem to be measuring a bit bigger than my first daughter.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Your 12-week nuchal translucency (NT) measurement of 1.81 mm (millimeters) was well within the normal range, and with a low-risk non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT), your overall risk remains low. The 20-week nuchal fold (NF) measurement of 4.9 mm is at the upper limit of normal, but factors like fetal position, amniotic fluid levels, and scanning technique can influence the measurement. Since no other anomalies were reported and your baby is measuring slightly bigger, this could also contribute. Regarding the marginal cord insertion, it typically just requires monitoring to ensure proper fetal growth and placental function. Your doctor may suggest follow-up ultrasounds, but based on your reports, everything appears reassuring.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
