Could allergies cause cold sensations and nerve issues?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 22-year-old male with no known health issues. On Sunday night, I had a meal consisting of Langostino, vegetables, and Mexican squash with my wife. Shortly afterward, she experienced mild tingling in her mouth, and I noticed some numbness in my face. The sensation felt similar to the aftermath of local anesthesia from a dental procedure. There was an increased cold sensation in my mouth, tongue, and cheeks, while light touch and pain sensitivity were reduced.
This sensation has persisted since the meal, and today I notice it more pronounced on the left side of my face, with a clear boundary down the midline (involving the maxillary and mandibular regions, but with no apparent ophthalmic involvement). Additionally, my left nostril feels somewhat "weak," as if there is a slight issue with the sinus or breathing passage.
I do not have insurance, and I am unsure how to proceed or what this could be. My hope is that it is an unusual allergic reaction to the Langostino, which I have never had before, but the asymmetry makes me concerned it could be a vascular or structural issue. I would greatly appreciate any advice.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
The sudden onset of these symptoms after a particular meal suggests an allergic reaction rather than a structural or vascular issue. This is further supported by the fact that your wife also experienced numbness in her mouth.
The nerve responsible for facial sensation is very sensitive, and the involvement of one division can lead to symptoms affecting all three divisions.
The "weakness" in your nose and nostrils is likely due to the numbness in that area.
In my opinion, these symptoms should improve on their own within a few days. There is no need to take any action at this time.
I hope this explanation clarifies the reasoning behind this advice.
Thank you for using iCliniq, and have a nice day.
Please let me know if you want some help.
Thank you.
