What are the CPAP alternatives for treating sleep apnea?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was told I have obstructive sleep apnea after doing a sleep test. I tried CPAP, but I can not sleep with the mask on. Are there any other devices or treatments that work just as well? I heard about a mouthpiece or surgery, are they safe? I wake up tired, and my wife says I stop breathing a lot during sleep.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

Thank you for reaching out to our platform. I hope you are doing well.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common condition that can significantly impact your quality of life and overall health. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is often the most effective treatment, but I understand that many patients find the mask uncomfortable.

Fortunately, there are alternative options to consider:

  1. Oral appliance therapy: A custom-fitted mouthpiece can help keep your airway open during sleep. This is generally well-tolerated and can be effective, especially for mild to moderate OSA.
  2. Surgical options: Procedures such as uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) or newer techniques can reduce airway obstruction. Surgery may be considered if other treatments fail, but it requires careful evaluation of risks and benefits.
  3. Lifestyle modifications: Weight loss, sleeping on your side, avoiding alcohol, and treating nasal congestion can improve symptoms.

It is important to follow up with a sleep specialist to discuss these options and find the best treatment tailored to your needs. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to fatigue, cardiovascular issues, and other complications, so managing it effectively is crucial.

Hope this answers your questions.

Thank you.
