How can I improve sticky or clumpy hair texture?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My hair is my problem. After taking bath, my hair is sticking with each other and not separating from each other, even when I comb. Initially, it was little, but now it is heavy. Please help.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I understand how distressing and frustrating it can be to notice sudden changes in your hair texture. Since the problem has progressed from mild to severe, it is important to evaluate it properly. I would like to ask you a few important questions:

  1. Do you experience itching, scaling, redness, or dandruff on the scalp?
  2. Have you recently used any new shampoo, conditioner, oil, hair mask, henna, dye, or keratin treatment?
  3. Do you use heat styling tools (blow dryer, straightener)?
  4. Is there hair fall, breakage, or thinning along with this issue?
  5. Does the hair feel sticky, waxy, or rough when you touch it?
  6. Do you have any history of lice infection at home, like in your family or yourself, and do you notice any pimples on your scalp?

And to manage the condition, avoid oiling, heavy conditioners, or styling products for the time being; wash hair with a mild, sulfate-free clarifying shampoo; and use a hair mask on hair below the ears, avoiding putting it on the scalp. Daily, two to three times per week, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water, gently detangle only when hair is partially dry, using a wide-tooth comb. Avoid heat styling and tight hairstyles.

For an accurate diagnosis, I need clear photos of your scalp and hair strands and answers to the above questions. Based on that, I can guide you regarding whether this is a scalp condition, hair shaft issue, or product-related problem, and suggest targeted treatment.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
