Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My baby was delivered four and a half years ago; I got my period once after nine months of delivery and again this month. I did not get my period in between. We planned to prevent pregnancy, so the doctor prescribed me to take two tablets of Meprate per day for five days; now I am breastfeeding. Is it safe to take Meprate while breastfeeding?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns.

Meprate (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) is not harmful to the baby at this age. Meprate can cause digestion problems in babies below six months old if the mother is breastfeeding.

My advice:

Consult your specialist doctor, talk to them, and take medications with their consent.

  1. To avoid pregnancy, you can take oral contraceptives or go for a contraceptive device like Mirena (intrauterine hormonal device) or implants, injection of Depo-Provera 150 mg/ml (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) for three months as per your choice and convenience.
  2. Do a serum beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) to clarify your pregnancy status. If the Beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) results are negative, then you can start with contraceptives. It has been four and half years since you delivered a baby, so you need to regulate menstrual cycles even though you are completely or partially breastfeeding.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
