Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Can ORS (oral rehydration salt) be given to workers in hot weather conditions?
Are there any restrictions or precautions to be taken?
Please suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and can understand your concern.
As the name oral rehydration solution signifies, it has to be used for oral rehydration therapy in conditions associated with fluid loss, such as diarrhea, vomiting, or any other causes like exposure to heat. The human body needs water to maintain enough blood and other fluids to function properly.
You become dehydrated if your body loses more fluids than you are drinking. You may lose fluids in a variety of ways, like when urinating, when you vomit or have diarrhea, when sweating, or when exposed to extreme temperatures. Along with the fluids, your body also loses electrolytes, which are salts normally found in blood, other fluids, and cells.
Signs of dehydration include a flushed face, extreme thirst more than normal or unable to drink, dry, warm skin, inability to pass urine or urinate reduced amounts of dark yellow urine, dizziness made worse when you are standing, weakness, cramping in the arms and legs, crying with few or no tears, sleepiness or irritability, headaches, dry mouth, and dry tongue with thick saliva.
If the above symptoms appear for any reason, you can also replace both fluids and electrolytes by drinking sports drinks or an oral rehydration solution (ORS).
I hope this answers your query.
Let me know if I need to assist you further.
Thank you.
