Why do I have numbness and paresthesia after an orbital fracture?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I damaged the walls of my maxillary sinus and my jaw in an accident. In addition, I had an orbital blowout fracture, which required an incision to my lower eyelid and the repositioning and stabilization of the bone with titanium plates.

After 35 days, my jaw is okay, and I can eat and chew even nuts. But what I am scared of is that my lower eyelid does not move. When I smile, it feels relatively natural overall.

In addition, I have right-sided sensory problems and feel like my face is swollen, probably due to an infraorbital nerve. How long should I wait, or should I be worried already?

The doctor claimed there was no need for surgery and that all four of the maxillary sinus wall fractures would mend on their own. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.

Nerve injury takes time to regain sensation, and it is impossible to get a complete sensation like before the accident. Take a multivitamin like Neurobion Forte (Vitamin B complex) once daily for one or two months.

Consult a specialist doctor, talk to them, and then take the medication. It is better to wait and keep trying to move the eyelids.

Hopefully, all will be fine soon, and see your surgeon again to give a detailed examination to assess what else is possible.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
