Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 50-year-old man who was diagnosed with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). For the past two weeks, I had a fever, persistent dry cough, and shortness of breath. My chest X-ray showed mild lung changes, and my oxygen levels dropped to 91 percent when I was moving around. Blood tests revealed some inflammation, but no signs of a bacterial infection. I have been using inhalers and resting, but I still feel fatigued and have trouble breathing with activity. Could this infection cause long-term lung problems? Should we consider additional tests or treatments to ensure I make a full recovery?
Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to iCliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) typically causes mild to moderate illness, and while it is uncommon for it to cause long-term lung problems, it can lead to lingering symptoms like a cough or wheezing, especially in individuals with pre-existing lung conditions. Most people recover within a few weeks, but there can be some fatigue and shortness of breath as the body heals. If your oxygen levels are dropping to 91 percent when you are moving around, it is important to continue monitoring them. If they consistently drop below 90 percent or you notice more difficulty breathing, you should seek medical advice. You may need additional treatments like corticosteroids or supplemental oxygen.
Follow-up testing like another chest X-ray or a pulmonary function test might be useful to ensure your lungs are healing properly. If you are still having significant breathing issues, your doctor might adjust your treatment plan, such as adding inhaled corticosteroids or bronchodilators. Most people recover completely, but it can take time. Make sure to follow up with your doctor if symptoms persist or worsen to ensure you are on the right track to full recovery.
I hope this helps.
Let me know if you have any other concerns.
Thank you.
