Can a pacemaker patient continue to use a hearing aid?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother-in-law is 75 years old having a pacemaker installed in her heart. She had to take off her hearing aid device since the cardiologist said the electromagnetic signals would interfere with the pacemaker's working. Can a pacemaker and hearing aid both co-exist if the hearing aid battery is kept at a distance of more than six inches from the place of the pacemaker installed? If yes, then which hearing aid is to be purchased? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Phonak's hearing aid would be best for her. Never keep the RCD in your breast pocket or 10 inches within the range of the pacemaker; both devices work on electromagnetic waves and hence may interfere with each other. An accurate device can be suggested only after knowing the company and configurations of the pacemaker.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
