Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am a 21-year-old experiencing painful sex accompanied by a burning sensation in the pelvic region. The pain is quite severe and concerning.
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concerns.
In a 21-year-old, the most common causes of painful intercourse include vaginal or pelvic infections, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, cervicitis, and vaginal infections like bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections.
Sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydia and gonorrhea, can also lead to deep pain during intercourse, pelvic burning, and general discomfort.
Vaginal dryness, inflammation, or pelvic floor muscle spasms may result in pain, especially during penetration. Conditions like endometriosis can cause significant pain during sex, usually characterized by deeper pain often associated with pelvic discomfort during menstrual periods.
The sensation of heat or burning in the pelvic region suggests inflammation or infection. If accompanied by abnormal vaginal discharge, foul odor, itching, fever, lower abdominal pain, or pain during urination, the likelihood of infection increases.
Your symptoms should not be ignored or managed at home; they require a proper gynecological examination. You must visit a doctor, and they may perform a pelvic examination, collect vaginal swabs, conduct urine tests, and possibly perform an ultrasound to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.
Your treatment will depend on the diagnosis and may include antibiotics, antifungal medications, or other targeted therapies.
Until you can see a doctor, it is important to avoid sexual intercourse, refrain from using vaginal washes or herbal products, and not take antibiotics without a prescription.
Seek urgent medical care if you experience severe or worsening pain, fever, vomiting, foul-smelling discharge, or bleeding.
A final diagnosis cannot be confirmed without a physical examination and tests such as a pelvic exam, vaginal swab, urine test, and possibly an ultrasound.
Immediate medical evaluation by a gynecologist is strongly advised for you, as conditions like pelvic inflammatory disease require prompt treatment to prevent long-term complications, such as infertility or chronic pelvic pain.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I would be happy to guide you. Please keep your valuable feedback for better patient care.
Thank you so much.
