Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a urethral stricture and use a size 18 catheter every morning, however at the moment I can not insert the catheter all the way in and when taking the catheter out, it takes a long time and I can feel it pulling on my urethra. Can you help me into why this is happening and if I should stop using my catheter in the morning as it could be causing more problems?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. In order to help you, I need a few more details from you:

  1. How long ago was your urethral stricture diagnosed?
  2. What primary treatment was done for it? Endoscopic surgery or urethroplasty?
  3. Did your doctor advise you to be on a catheter for this long?
  4. When was your last follow-up with them?
  5. Do you have any trouble passing urine, such as straining to pass urine, increased frequency, urgency, or a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying?
  6. Are you diabetic or hypertensive?
  7. Have you had any bleeding from the urethra during these catheterizations?

Please revert back with the details and I will do my best to assist you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had a few operations just because my urethra had closed and had to keep a catheter in for 2 weeks. I want to get the urethral plastery operation done. I have not had a follow-up for a while due to catheterizing for so long. I am not diabetic or hypertensive. I do not ever have any trouble passing urine however with me struggling to get the inserted and taken out easily I imagine I could have to have another urethra opening operation again.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Just to be clear, all your surgeries were endoscopic? Insert a camera into your urethra and cut open the blockage. Generally speaking, if this occurs after a couple of endoscopic surgeries, as well as self-catheterisation it indicates that the stricture has reformed. The best and most permanent solution to address this issue is urethroplasty. If you leave it and continue to do self-catheterisation the worse, it will become the urethroplasty will be tougher as well. I would suggest to see your urologist and plan for surgery as soon as possible.

I hope this helps.
