Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Ten plus worm-like things have been expelled today. Yesterday, a hard plug of mucus came out. Mucus and worms followed treatment with enemas, a Vermox worming tablet, and natural antiparasitic and liver cleansing herbs. What could the mucus plug be? I have had pain around the liver/gallbladder region. Can you please identify the worms? I have sent them to a lab, but doctors do not seem to be familiar with this type of worm.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
The images appear to resemble flatworms and tapeworms. However, the identification of the worm needs to be certified by a microbiology expert in an accredited laboratory using these samples. More importantly, it is essential to understand the entire history of worm infestations, diet patterns, choices, and family history of the same. Additionally, it is requested to share the doctor's prescriptions and medical records, including blood and other laboratory test reports. The only statement mentioned is increased Immunoglobulin E (IgE) and eosinophils, suggesting an increased allergic phenomenon and worm infestation; however, no report is attached to corroborate this statement.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.

Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
I have sent samples to the lab, but I think it will be several weeks before they return with the results. Do you know specifically which type of flatworm or tapeworm they resemble? I am currently taking Mebendazole and Pyrantel do you think this is appropriate? What worms does Ivermectin target? Have you ever seen a mucus plug like that? Some of the worms were covered in mucus is that normal? I suspect they were hiding under the plug.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome back toicliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
You may have mixed worm infestations, which may include pinworms, flatworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and roundworms. Pyrantel is primarily indicated for pinworms, and Mebendazole is often advised as a combination. However, both medicines work against other worms as well.
There is a likelihood of other worms based on diet, such as eating improperly cooked meat, especially pork, and beef, which can lead to pork and beef tapeworm infestations, as well as pork roundworm infections.
Mucus release is not uncommon among larger worms. If you have occupational or personal exposure to fields, you may have Ascariasis, a type of hookworm infection. Your picture also resembles ropeworms, another type of intestinal worm, but some experts consider them nothing more than mucus plugs combined with intestinal contents. Under any circumstances, stool examination and treatment with appropriate anthelmintic medications may be required.
Albendazole alone or in combination with Ivermectin provides adequate coverage and also helps reduce immune reactions such as eosinophilia.
Please start the above medications if you have already completed the earlier ones. If you have not, please complete Mebendazole and Pyrantel first.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
