Do hand tremors and stiffness indicate Parkinson’s disease?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 67-year-old male and have been experiencing a number of changes that are starting to bother my family members and me.
The first symptom I am experiencing is a slight tremor in my left hand, which occurs especially when I sit still. Also, my handwriting has decreased in size; moreover, my movements have slowed down. It now takes me more time to stand from a seat and to turn while walking.
Sometimes I feel stiffness in my arms and legs, like my muscles do not want to follow me. Moreover, my wife tells me that when I walk, I shuffle like something is wrong with my feet. Can those symptoms be related to Parkinson's disease?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
All the symptoms which you have stated above, like resting tremors in one of your hands, bradykinesia (slowed movement), rigidity (muscle stiffness), shuffling gait, and micrographia (small handwriting), are all classic early symptoms of parkinson's disease.
Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder involving motor problems due to the destruction of dopamine-producing brain cells. It may not necessarily mean that you have parkinson's disease, but it is definitely something that you should worry about.
Early diagnosis will be very useful because Levodopa and other treatments may dramatically increase mobility and quality of life. Moreover, physical therapy, exercises, and occupational therapy will be very useful in maintaining independence and functionality.
I understand that you are anxious about the diagnosis, but many patients with Parkinson’s Disease live successfully for decades with adequate treatment and care. At this moment, the key thing is to get an early diagnosis in order to get treatment if needed.
I would suggest that you see a neurologist and undergo a physical examination and all the necessary tests. After the diagnosis is established, an adequate treatment program can be designed.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
